We’re asking the Scottish Government to Get Reuse Right for Scotland’s circular charities and social enterprises.
Every day across Scotland, community reuse, sharing and repair charities help families spend less on quality items, create green jobs and build more resilient communities.
We want Scotland to have strong reuse policies that give these organisations the support and opportunities they need to continue doing what they do best.
Why does the Scottish Government need to Get Reuse Right?
Get Reuse Right is a campaign that calls for strong reuse policies to support Scotland’s circular charities and social enterprises.
The circular third sector is made up of fantastic organisations that support our communities, protect the environment and strengthen the economy. We believe these organisations should benefit from strong reuse policies that deliver tangible support, open new opportunities and create the right conditions for them to thrive.
Our Get Reuse Right Summary Policy Paper shares the policy actions we believe the Scottish Government should take to Get Reuse Right.
Discover the Get Reuse Right Policy Actions below:
Equip the community reuse sector to be more resilient.
- Introduce a reuse credits scheme for the community reuse sector.
- Direct a sustainable flow of products to community reuse organisations through implementing restrictions on the disposal of unsold goods.
- Strengthen public procurement policy to prioritise purchasing from community reuse organisations before purchasing new.
Embed community reuse as a local, easy and affordable choice.
- Require local authorities to prioritise preparation for reuse in the new statutory Household Recycling Code of Practice.
- Improve signposting of existing services and support organisations to expand where community reuse options are limited.
- Roll out a Scottish Repair Voucher scheme, starting with a regional pilot.
Prioritise reuse over recycling.
- Commission research to establish a national baseline for reuse, then use it to set ambitious and measurable targets for national reuse, priority materials, and local authority preparation for reuse.
